Chuck Close

Figura di spicco dell’arte contemporanea dai primi anni ’70, Chuck Close è un artista internazionalmente famoso per i suoi ritratti, dipinti in scala monumentale a partire da fotografie. Close ha esplorato negli anni un’ampia gamma di tecniche, processi e materiali fino ad arrivare all’utilizzo del mosaico a seguito del suo coinvolgimento nel progetto di arte pubblica per la Metropolitana di New York. La serie Subway Portraits è costituita da dodici opere, in mosaico e in ceramica, ed è stata commissionata dal programma Arts & Design dell’Autorità di Trasporto Metropolitano, nel 2017.
La mostra al Museo d’Arte della Città di Ravenna presenta la nuova serie di opere a mosaico, affiancate da opere relative come stampe, arazzi e fotografie, e documenta inoltre il lavoro svolto da Mosaika Art and Design e da Magnolia Editions per la realizzazione delle opere installate nella stazione Second Avenue-86th Street di New York City.

In 2017 New York State Metropolitan Transportation Authority opened to the public the Second Avenue subway line. Chuck Close (1940), a prominent artist, known for his large-scale portraits and self-portraits from photographs, produced at the 86th Street station his Subway Portraits series: twelve permanent works, ten of which were mosaics, made in partnership with Mosaika Art and Design in Montréal, while the other two were made of ceramic tiles, in partnership with Magnolia Editions in Oakland.
This book presents his most recent works, dealing with the American artist’s whole research, which investigates the endless possibilities of building, rebuilding and seeing the human face by using unique and high-impact techniques and languages, from Hyperrealism to the edge of abstraction, experimenting with mosaics and ceramic for the first time ever.
