Seicento-Novecento. Da Magnasco a Fontana

Virginia Baradel ha scelto di “entrare con il passo dell’amatore” nelle collezioni Rossi Rathgeb e Merlini. La prima, formata da tre generazioni di notabili bergamaschi, Alberto Rathgeb, Giuseppe Bassi Rathgeb e Roberto Bassi Rathgeb, venne donata da quest’ultimo al Comune aponense celebre per le cure termali, cui era legato da lunga e prediletta consuetudine. Una collezione eclettica con opere riconducibili alla vocazione familiare rivolta al ‘600-‘800 lombardo e bergamasco in particolare, che annovera inoltre sculture e reperti archeologici, argenti, i mobili e arredi.
Assai nota e celebrata è la collezione di arte contemporanea di Giuseppe Merlini formata da una galleria così ampia e cospicua di pezzi, da prestarsi a instaurare dialoghi e corrispondenze inedite con opere e luoghi di altre epoche.
Pur nell’evidente diversità, le due collezioni tuttavia sono state formate entrambe con opere dettate dal gusto personale del collezionista e dai rapporti di stima e, spesso, di amicizia intrattenuti con gli artisti. Le due collezioni presentano il medesimo profilo di pregio artistico orientato esclusivamente dalla soggettività che nel caso di Roberto Bassi Rathgeb si estende anche a un approccio di studio e di riscoperta dei maestri vedutisti lombardi del ‘700.
Gli affreschi delle varie sale (databili dal ‘600 al’800) offrono delle narrazioni così cariche di suggestioni, sia dal punto di vita tematico che pittorico, da porsi quale schermo privilegiato per incursioni di un contemporaneo che, nella diversità, esalta ulteriormente le qualità di entrambe.

The volume tells of the encounter between two collections, namely the works of contemporary art collected by Giuseppe Merlini and the series of masterpieces, dated from the sixteenth to the early twentieth century, brought together by Roberto Bassi Rathgeb.
The two collections, presented side by side, intertwine offering the readers, on the one hand, the opportunity to get to know extraordinary works from the Italian art scene from the seventeenth to the twentieth century, and on the other to experience new suggestions of reading, arising from the juxtaposition of styles and different languages, only apparently in antithesis.
The pairing of the works - sorted by the genres of portrait, still life and landscape - also allows to shed light on the personality of the two architects of the collections, both of Lombard origin and united by a conscious and targeted collecting passion, driven by desire of knowledge as much as that of possession.
Among the artists represented there are Magnasco, Moretto, Baschenis, Van Beyeren, Ronzoni, De Pisis, De Chirico, Fontana, Morlotti, Baj, Wildt, Severini, Guttuso, Parmiggiani, Dorazio and Ferroni, to whom an in-depth chapter is dedicated.
