Robert Capa

Dal 6 maggio fino al 22 ottobre 2023, il Centro Saint-Bénin di Aosta ospiterà la mostra Robert Capa. L’opera 1932-1954: un nuovo appuntamento con la fotografia internazionale a cura di Gabriel Bauret in collaborazione con Daria Jorioz, dirigente della Struttura Attività espositive e promozione identità culturale di Aosta.

L'accattivante mostra dedicata a Robert Capa, uno dei protagonisti assoluti della fotografia del Novecento, ci svelerà la personalità del fotografo a 360° con alcuni reportage che si allontanano dagli scatti più famosi di guerra, e che rivelano la sua figura su altri campi artistici.
Le fotografie di Capa non si limitarono difatti a testimoniare eventi drammatici, ma spaziarono anche in altri ambiti, dalla Spagna alla Cina, dalla Berlino del dopoguerra a Israele, fino al ritorno in Asia. Da queste molteplici sfaccettature nasce questa curatissima e completa retrospettiva che, grazie a circa 300 scatti del fotografo, esplora dalle più celebri fotografie di guerra a quelle scattate da un Capa ancora poco conosciuto dal grande pubblico.

La mostra si articolerà in 9 sezioni tematiche: Fotografie degli esordi, 1932 – 1935; La speranza di una società più giusta, 1936; Spagna: l’impegno civile, 1936 – 1939; La Cina sotto il fuoco del Giappone, 1938; A fianco dei soldati americani, 1943 – 1945; Verso una pace ritrovata, 1944 – 1954; Viaggi a est, 1947 – 1948; Israele terra promessa, 1948 – 1950; Ritorno in Asia: una guerra che non è la sua, 1954.

The chronology of Capa’s oeuvre, a real monument in the history of photography, marks the pages of this book extremely rich in images, giving on the one hand the idea of its vastness and on the other outlining how the photographer works in the field. The book traces the main stages of a path whose brightness is almost unparalleled, and gives way to various “icons” emerging from this exceptional corpus. His war reports have shaped his legend, as Michel Lefebvre states in his essay, but Capa, although often the first and closest, shows us reality also from other angles: his images describe moments that refer us to him as a man, to his sensitivity towards victims and migrants, thus evoking his journey from his native Hungary. It is said that music reveals itself among its notes: this book lets us glimpse some facets of a complex, enterprising and undoubtedly never completely satisfied character, who does not hesitate to risk his career as his life. If Capa has shown a gamer’s personality, his work takes on an epic dimension that will not escape the tragic ending.
