Questa pubblicazione documenta le mostre di David Smith presentate a Zurigo (giugno 2008) ed a Duisburg (febbraio-maggio 2009). Si può affermare senza esagerazione che il lavoro di David Smith è visto negli Stati Uniti come il lavoro probabilmente dello scultore più importante del ventesimo secolo, mentre in Europa è conosciuto da un piccolo gruppo di un'elite intellettuale. In questo volume i motivi di questa situazione sono osservati da angolature differenti attraverso vari articoli.

Indubbiamente, mostrare i lavori di David Smith in Europa è una di quelle rare opportunità di conoscere il lavoro di uno dei grandi maestri attraverso una scoperta interamente nuova.

Per l'apertura della mostra in Germania la David Smith Estate ha messo a disposizione dei lavori dell'artista per la prima volta, permettendo di esibire quella parte della produzione che non è stata quasi mai autorizzata per le mostre. Questo catalogo presenta David Smith in un modo che finora non è stato visto neppure negli Stati Uniti.

This publication documents the David Smith exhibitions presented in Zurich (June 2008) and in Duisburg (February-May 2009).

It can be said without exaggeration that the work of David Smith is seen in the United States as the work of probably the most important sculptor of the 20th century, whereas it is known in Europe to a mere handful of an intellectual elite. The reasons for this situation are being looked at from different angles through various articles in this book.

Undoubtedly, showing David Smith’s works in Europe is one of those rare opportunities to experience the work of one of the great masters by making an entirely new discovery.

For the opening of the exhibition in Germany the David Smith Estate made works available for the first time and allowed part of the artist’s production to be exhibited which is almost never released for exhibitions. This catalogue presents David Smith in a way that has so far not even been seen in the United States.
