Abstract

Fashion Magazine is the celebrated annual publication of the historic Magnum Photos agency, entrusted every time to one of its most brilliant photographers.
The 2010 issue features the work of the Italian Paolo Pellegrin (Rome, 1964), who joined Magnum in 2005.
The dichotomy of natural and artificial provides the key to an understanding of the photographer’s work, where images captured in the world of fashion highlight the contrast between the naturalness of the human body and the artifice of the designers’ creations.
The same concept is perceptible on a larger scale on observing the world through Pellegrin’s images. Revealed before our eyes is a constantly evolving landscape in which vast natural scenarios alternate with the completely manmade panoramas of cities and metropolises, which sometimes find themselves at the mercy of nature once again, as shown by the photographs of the New Orleans floods in 2005. This evocative exploration also prompts reflection on the respect that nature demands and the need for truly sustainable development.

Paolo Pellegrin (Rome, 1964). He became a Magnum Photos nominee in 2001 and a full member in 2005. He is a contract photographer for Newsweek magazine. Pellegrin is winner of many awards, including eight World Press Photo and numerous Photographer of the Year Awards, a Leica Medal of Excellence, an Olivier Rebbot Award, the Hansel-Meith Preis, and the Robert Capa Gold Medal Award. In 2006 he was assigned the W. Eugene Smith Grant in Humanistic Photography. He has published four books. He lives in New York and Rome.
