Proceedings of the international conference "Anything else?" at Castle Trauttmansdorff (Merano)
27-29 May 2010
The waiter: the last bastion of courtesy in Vienna and the symbol of the “shortage economy” in East Germany, not to mention the eternal image of the charming waitress who may be just a little too free with her favours. A conference held at the Touriseum, Meran/Merano, in May 2010 addressed the economic, social and cultural history of the waiter, the customer or guest, and the tip, and the question of why so few want to work in the hospitality sector nowadays. The proceedings published here illustrate how service personnel see themselves and how others see them, without forgetting the stereotyped images created by media like literature, cinema and television.
