Romeo and Juliet: a tale of love between two adolescents that sets off on a light, almost frisky note, but then by a bad twist of fate suddenly turns into a senseless and violent tragedy in which love soon engenders death.

This tale, caught between fiction and reality, unfolds in just five days. Yet its echo resounds throughout the centuries, stretching across literature, music, the figurative arts, theatre and cinema. “Fair Verona” is the city Shakespeare chose, in the late 16th century, as the setting for what is perhaps the most famous of all his dramas. To this day, its streets seem haunted by the graceful ghosts of the two splendid, passionate and tender lovers, guiding us across places of the imagination made real by their evocative power: the House of Juliet, the Balcony, the House of Romeo, and the Tomb.

These are all fictional sites, figments of popular imagination, but they continue to be permeated by an aura of magic: the timeless spell of youth and love.
