The Danish artist Sofie Thorsen (Århus, 1971) lives in Vienna. In her works Thorsen focuses on the process of seeing, as well as on light and on its role in various media.
In the three great work complexes which she presents in the Kunsthaus Graz and in the Kunsthaus Baselland, she finds in the reduction to the pure, symbolic nature of the contents a certain distance to places and situations, which she analyses with the means of the medium concerned.
The eponymous film Cut A–A’ concerns the spirit of Socialist Modernism and a cinema that is attached to a museum, seemingly utopian and fallen out of favour. As a collagetype, highly contrasting sequence of images rowed up next to each other, it is devoted to the abstract recreation of a view of what architectural form communicates.
Thorsen’s works oscillate between a perceptible copy of reality, and possible fiction – and in this way open up new realms of association in front of the viewer. Besides a Comprehensive section with illustrations and views of installations, the catalogue contains an introduction by exhibition curators Katrin Bucher Trantow, Katia Huemer and Sabine Schaschl, as well as an essay by Christian Teckert.
Precisely analysing the works in the exhibition, Teckert sheds light on Thorsen’s artistic process as an examination of the forms of visibility and the ruptures in the aesthetic of modernism.

Die dänische, in Wien lebende Künstlerin Sofie Thorsen (Århus, 1971) widmet sich in ihren Arbeiten dem Vorgang des Sehens, dem Licht und dessen Rolle in den unterschiedlichen Medien.
In den drei großen Werkkomplexen, die sie im Kunsthaus Graz sowie im Kunsthaus Baselland präsentiert, findet sie in der Reduktion auf den reinen Zeichencharakter der Inhalte eine bestimmte Distanz zu den Orten und Situationen, die sie mit den Mitteln des Mediums analysiert.
Der titelgebende Film Schnitt A–A’ handelt vom Geist der sozialistischen Moderne und von einem an ein Museum angegliederten, utopisch anmutenden und in Ungnade gefallenen Kino. Als collage-artig aneinandergereihte, kontrastreiche Bildsequenzen widmet er sich der abstrahierten Wiederherstellung eines Blicks auf die Mitteilungen der architektonischen Form. Thorsens Arbeiten changieren zwischen erkennbarer Wirklichkeitsabbildung und möglicher Fiktion – und öffnen auf diese Weise neue assoziative Räume vor den Augen der Betrachter/innen.
Neben einem ausführlichen Abbildungsteil und Installationsansichten beinhaltet der Katalog ein Vorwort der Ausstellungskuratorinnen Katrin Bucher Trantow, Katia Huemer und Sabine Schaschl sowie einen Essay von Christian Teckert. Präzise die Werke der Ausstellung analysierend, beleuchtet er Thorsens künstlerisches Vorgehen als eine Auseinandersetzung mit den Formen der Sichtbarkeit und den Bruchlinien in der Ästhetik der Moderne.
