Abstract

This volume accompanies the inaugural series of exhibitions of Journey to Italy. Masterpieces from the Museums of the World, an innovative cultural project carried out in collaboration with the Ministry of National Heritage and Culture.

This initiative, which will repeat annually, makes it possible for major foreign museums to display some of their key works in different state institutions in Italy. The goal is to present masterpieces from prestigious international museums to the Italian public, offering visitors the opportunity not only to discover and contemplate important works of art housed abroad, but also to admire picturesque historic Italian monuments through an inter-regional tour along the Adriatic coast.

The lending museum for this year is the Fondation Bemberg of Toulouse, which holds a rich collection of works by Flemish artists, including Lucas Cranach the Elder, Rogier van der Weyden and Pieter Brueghel the Younger, and of nineteenth-century French paintings, including works by Signac, Bonnard and Matisse.

The Italian state monuments participating in the project are the Historic Museum of the Castle of Miramare, Trieste (with the exhibition "Sì dolce è il tormento: l'amore in tre capolavori di Lucas Cranach il Vecchio"), the Gradara Fortress (with "Quell'universo particolarissimo: il fascino dell'arte fiamminga in cinque capolavori") and the Swabian Castle of Bari (with the exposition "Dopo l'Impressionismo. Il nuovo sguardo sulla natura in tre opere di Bonnard, Signac, Matisse")
