Abstract
Nessun artista contemporaneo ha attraversato il variegato paesaggio delle arti come Robert Wilson, mantenendo comunque una poetica unitaria, una fedele adesione a un progetto artistico coerente e pur sempre reinventato in forme nuove e sorprendenti. Se spazio e tempo sono gli assi portanti anche dei suoi Video Portraits, come testimoniare sulle pagine di un libro immagini still life che ci appaiono raggelate ma che – a ben guardare – svelano nel tempo sia vita che movimento? Ci introducono in questa avventura estetica i saggi di Achille Bonito Oliva, Robert L. Pincus, Francesco Casetti e Carmelo Marabello, nonché un’intervista all’artista americano. In continuità con l’opera di Wilson, la sequenza delle immagini di questo libro tenta la grande sfida di superare la staticità del ritratto fotografico. Luciano Romano, autore delle immagini, cerca di “vedere” ogni ritratto in un proprio spazio, in dialogo con l’ambiente che lo ospita. Le immagini fotografiche smettono di essere semplice documentazione e si trasformano in una mise en scène che si completa con l’imprevedibile contributo della realtà, cercando di cogliere quell’attimo in cui l’opera e lo spettatore entrano in dialogo per sintonia o contrappunto, rivelando sorpresa, emozione e divertimento.

No other contemporary artist has spanned the varied horizon of the arts as Robert Wilson has, yet maintaining a homogeneous poetics, an unflagging commitment to a consistent artistic project constantly reinvented in new and striking forms. If space and time are the pillars of his Video Portraits as well, then how can these be conveyed on the pages of a book via apparently frozen still life images, which however, over time, reveal both life and movement? Essays by Achille Bonito Oliva, Robert L. Pincus, Francesco Casetti and Carmelo Marabello, together with an interview with the American artist set the scene for this aesthetic adventure. In continuity with Wilson’s work, the sequence of the images in this book is an arduous challenge to overcome the static nature of photographic portraits. Photographer Luciano Romano strives to “see” each portrait within its own space, interacting with its surroundings. The photographic images are no longer a mere documentation; they become a mise en scène complete with the unpredictable contribution of reality, seeking to capture that moment in which work and spectator interact in harmony or counterpoint, thus revealing surprise, emotion and enjoyment.
