Abstract

A tractor seat that transforms into a stool, a bicycle seat that becomes an oscillating yet practicable point of support, a shapeless bag full of polystyrene balls that accommodates and accompanies any movement, a bundle of sticks that opens to become a clothes hanger...

We could go on in a whirlwind of ground-breaking examples in attempt to show what the company, founded in 1954, has achieved thanks to the desire, will, hard work and energy of Aurelio Zanotta.

A born entrepreneur in his field, who contributed to write a “collective” history in Italian industry: 550 projects created by 120 designers – as Enzo Mari, Alessandro Mendini, Bruno Munari, Achille and Pier Giacomo Castiglioni, Gio Ponti, Marco Zanuso, Gae Aulenti, Ettore Sottsass, just to mention some – in 60 years of history, and almost 100 pieces that have won awards and have been included in design museums all over the world.

A dictionary of design “stories”: 101 thoughts, anecdotes and critical interpretations on as many (and more) designs put into production over the course of sixty years of Zanotta, tripping over ourselves in an attempt to outline the characteristic horizons of so many successful projects including many famous masterpieces.
