Abstract

At the end of the 1960s, the architect Bernard Zehrfuss (1911-1996), key figure of the post-war years, was called to Lyon in order to create the Gallo-Roman Museum.
Right from his first visit, he designed an original and ambitious building, integrated into the site of the Roma theatres at Fourvière.
The fruit of an exemplary collaboration between architect, museographer and archaeologists, the museum in Lyon has today become a benchmark for archaeological museums and more widely in the history of 20th-century architecture.
This book created under the direction of Christine Desmoulins, architecture critic and a specialist on Zehrfuss, has been published on the occasion of the 40th anniversary of the museum and of the "Bernard Zehrfuss, architect from the spiral of time" exhibition. It retraces the exceptional career of its creator, the genesis of the project and the different stages of construction, and looks back over nearly forty years of temporary exhibitions.
