Abstract

The Civic Museums of Bassano del Grappa house a remarkable collection of works by that dynasty of painters (from Francesco the Elder to Giambattista Volpato) which culminated in the great art of Jacopo Dal Ponte, called Bassano. This catalogue is the first complete scientific one that travels through the birth, growth and dissemination of the art created in the Bassano family workshop; it does so through 90 files (drawn up by leading scholars specialized in Bassano works) illustrating the oil paintings, detached frescoes and even a drawing.
Jacopo’s works are at the heart of this volume, which finally pays tribute to the most significant and prestigious collection of paintings by this artist in the world; its path begins with his training, describes his later works and then comes to a close with the artworks also created in collaboration with his progeny. This catalogue documents the strong personality of an artist at the peak of the Italian Renaissance. A man who was able to lead his own activities and his family workshop to success. And all of this was done in a place that stood at the foot of the Alps and along the Brenta River – a place that was complementary yet so different from the Venice of great artists who inspired him (such as Titian), or his friends and fellow artists (such as Tintoretto and Veronese).
In addition to the paintings by Jacopo, this catalogue also describes the works by Francesco the Elder, Francesco the Younger, Leandro, Gerolamo, Giambattista and all the workshop apprentices. Many of these paintings have been studied herein for the first time, testifying the extraordinary success that the Bassano workshop paintings reaped even during the seventeenth century and all the way to the last of his followers – with Jacopo Apollonio presently standing out as one of the most prominent figures.
