Abstract

Lucio Dalla. Images and sounds is an attempt at offering a portrait of Lucio Dalla, one of the many possible of an artist as versatile and multifaceted as himself. In any case, a portrait that is necessary in commemorating the great singer-songwriter, reaffirming his central role in Italian culture, the extraordinary part he played in collective imagination and in the national identity. It is a portrait by images because Dalla, right from his debut, linked his expressiveness as songwriter and performer with his physicality, the way in which he proposed himself to the public, his clothes (his hats) and his gestures. The images on display all narrate the private, personal and less spectacular – yet no less eloquent – aspects of his universe. A universe made up of irony and profoundness, of friendship and collaboration, of care and passion. The pictures in this volume follow Dalla from 1979 until his last period of activities, from “Banana Republic” to 2012, the year of his death.
Through these snapshots by Lovino, Canitano, Ristori, Massarini, Viti and Harari we are trying to illuminate the songs that Dalla has written, performed and recorded. A small part of that infinite sea of lyrics by Dalla that – as affirmed by Gino Castaldo – made people cry, think and feel emotions. Songs that stirred the exalted and profound consciousness of Italians, songs that revealed collective feelings; songs that are merciless or naïve, at times mocking, shameless, sensational yet substantially always loving – full of stars, oceans and amazement.
