The images gathered in the volume Smoke created in response to the Genoese museum’s architecture, as a choreography of shapes floating in space challenging the public’s symbolic universe and perceptual moorings. Visiting the different rooms transforms each of us into a character out of Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland, who becomes gigantic or minuscule trapped in a sunset-neon-floor or amidst falling stars. Out-sized proportions and exaggerated distortions radically transform the relationship between the viewer and the artwork. Mark Handforth presents a surreal sequence of twisted lamp posts, fluorescent mandalas, gigantic coat hangers and crumpled stars that form a narrative itinerary marked by the dynamic tension between organic and inorganic shapes, abstraction and symbolic representation.
