Abstract

This work by Francesco Cilli is a rough and severe photo reportage about an activity and an experience we have forgotten. This concerns malformations. Even if Cilli uses from the title – describing doctors and all the staff involved in this human and civil adventure in Santa Maria Sick Assistance Center, Khulna, Bangladesh – the metaphor of military heroism, his photos describe such a state of emergency that make civil heroes he celebrate closer to courage and fear that war shows off. Our "far" and comfortable life, we live here in Europe, hides this situation.
Cilli’s photos point out every day life routes of a complicated and specialist organization, such as a medical team, with all its matters inside and outside “theatre of operations”: a military word I use because of the importance of backstage for this photo reportage. Through backstage he reveals not only body-care of operators (important to be professionally efficient too), but also practices and routine such as tidying up and storing clothing, materials and analysis, or discussing about preparation and realization of activities: first of all surgery. Here images simply show off what we see. Out of backstage suffering humanity comes out. Fear and tears, and children’s smiles: a sort of heroism, in its own way, in those people who are fighting against pain or lighting dark and tense atmosphere.
