The Role of the Gothic Workshop in the Upper Church of St. Francis at Assisi

In this paper it is proposed a reconsideration of the theory that the pictorial decoration of the Upper Churcha of St. Francis at Assisi, simultaneously using Nordic and Central Italian masters, was begun during the papacy of Pope Nicholas IV (1288-1292). This evaluation is based on possible models and in rapport with the Roman artistic milieu of the last quarter of the thirteenth century. In light of the collaboration between artists from different backgrounds it is believed that a more accurate interpretation of the Master of Isaac’s work can be done; who, according to the author, appears inspired by the spatial conception of Gothic architecture rather than from the revival of Ancient art.
