Terra senz’ombra is a photographic project on the Po Delta by Pietro Donzelli (Monte Carlo 1915–Milan 1998), one of the great masters of twentieth-century Italian photography. Taken over eight years, from 1953 to 1961, the photographs have been displayed in exhibitions in Italy and further afield. This volume presents the most comprehensive selection of pictures from his large-scale project published to date, documenting Donzelli’s extensive photographic culture. His work cannot be classified as reportage, understood as rapid, “gestural” shots, but rather as documentary photography, centered on observation and reflection. In this project on the Po Delta, the heart of Donzelli’s work, his realist and “humanist” approach to photography emerges to the full.
