Abstract

Contemporary creation in the stained glass windows of cathedrals, churches, chapels or civilian contexts has seen some unprecedented changes since 1945, which have been concerned not only with its artistic and technical complexity but also its institutional framework. This book aims to enlighten the public on the new challenges faced by contemporary stained glass.
The case studies here take us on a tour of France, and in particularly to Aube, the founding department of the Cité du Vitrail in Troyes and organiser of the Premières Rencontres Internationales du Vitrail, but it also takes us to Spain, Switzerland and Brazil.
Creation is considered from the various viewpoints of the different players involved – painterglassmakers, artists, art historians – without forgetting in Villenauxe-la-Grande (the site of the artist David Tremlett’s work), to let the inhabitants have their say too, as they are the first to be concerned by this art of stained glass which each and everyone is free to appropriate in their own way.
