The Acrobates exhibition has been organized by the museums of the city of Châlons-en-Champagne with the Centre national des arts du cirque (Cnac), and in co-curation with Pascal Jacob, circus historian and artistic director of the Phénix Circus and the Festival Mondial du Cirque de Demain. The theme of the acrobat is explored in all its forms within the collections of municipal museums and the incredible Jacob-William Collection.
The Acrobates exhibition highlights a selection of works of different natures, eras and origins, all of which showcase the acrobatic gesture. From the Etruscan sculptures of the 5th century BCE to the works by Picasso, Matisse and Derain, the theme of the acrobat is an inexhaustible source of inspiration.
This catalogue also presents loans from major national and international museums, since it is produced with the participation of: the Quai Branly-Jacques Chirac Museum (Paris), the Mucem (Marseille), the Royal Museums of Art and History (Brussels), the New National Museum of Monaco, the Guimet Museum of Asian Art (Paris), the Picasso Museum (Paris), the Louvre Museum (Paris), the Musée des arts et métiers - Cnam (Paris), the Rodin Museum (Paris), the Angers Public Library, the Rolin Museum (Autun), and the “Circus Art Museum J.Y. et G. Borg” Collection.
