The Corbella Company, which proclaimed itself the “First Italian Manufacturer of Jewellery and Weapons for the Theatre”, was founded in 1865 in the heart of Milan. From the very beginning of its long history, it specialized in the production of stage jewellery, weapons and accessories, taking the title of official supplier to Milan’s Teatro alla Scala. It then signed contracts with other prestigious international theatres, from La Fenice in Venice to the Teatro Costanzi in Rome and the Teatro Colón in Buenos Aires.
From the Unification of Italy to the great national and international exhibitions and up until the economic boom, the Corbella family was always in the spotlight, first in the theatre sector, supplying the best-known opera singers, from Margherita Carosio to Renata Tebaldi, and later alongside the great Italian manufacturers of costume jewellery.
This book documents some of Corbella’s most extraordinary objects, reconstructing and presenting to enthusiasts a fascinating chapter in the great history of Made in Italy.
