Ugo La Pietra & Manifattura Rometti

I witnessed Ugo move at ease through our factory and among our artists, observing, listening, and comparing technical and colour choices. There is a strong bond linking Rometti with Ugo La Pietra or rather the tangible relationship with living material, the Umbrian clay, which our craftsmen have shaped under the master’s guidance. It is a collaboration nurtured by the artist’s direct interventions in the form of ‘graffiti’ on fresh engobe into taut lines and mysterious symbols. His visionary and somewhat unsettling creativity appropriately takes street language and engages it with a tribal and totemic sacredness, whilst his exuberant fantasy is contained by extreme geometric and chromatic rigour.  Massimo Monini
