Abstract

After his apprenticeship in Florence in Verrocchio’s state-of-the-art workshop alongside Leonardo da Vinci and Lorenzo di Credi, around 1475 Pietro Perugino received his first important assignment from his homeland: the Adoration of the Magi for the church of Santa Maria dei Servi in Perugia. In the large panel, the young painter openly embraces Florentine figurative culture, taking Sandro Botticelli’s contemporary painting of the same subject as a model. But he also introduces a series of personal touches – the landscape with stretches of water, a meticulous attention to detail, the gentle features of his figures – that would make his style famous and that for a couple of decades would make him, as Agostino Chigi wrote, “the finest maestro in Italy”.
