Abstract

Since its construction began in 1443 on the site known as “Belvedere,” a place inside the area of urban expansion envisioned by Niccolò II d’Este, Casa Romei was celebrated as one of Ferrara’s most beautiful residences.
Over time it has undergone various modifications, first at the behest of Giovanni Romei and then, during the 16th century, of Cardinal Ippolito II d’Este, yet the structure’s original appearance has never been substantially changed.
This guide book reflects the visitor’s itinerary in the museum, which is distributed over two storeys and around two inner courtyards, alternating extraordinary architectural and pictorial treasures with an exhibition of sculptures, stone fragments and furniture.
This book is crucial to the understanding of the techniques for building and decorating the abodes of the nobility between the Middle Ages and the Reinassance, and reading it can enrich the visit with a detailed analysis of the themes connected to the history and the art of Ferrara between the 14th and 18th centuries.
