Abstract

The celebrations for the fiftieth anniversary of the death of Carlo Fornara (1871–1968) would make no sense unless taken as an opportunity to reassess the artist in light of the roots of his painting, his Vigezzo universe first and foremost, Divisionism, later, and his unresolved position in the art of the twentieth century, a period marked by aesthetic and philosophical premises that escaped him and in which he spent sixty-eight years of his very long life.
It is our hope that the paintings and papers on display, chosen from among the painter’s most successful works over a twenty year period, allow today’s art lovers to perceive the importance of a figure deeply loved by a certain northern audience, but not yet consecrated or completely understood.
