Selim Abdullah [...] preserves the existential need in the beauty of the composition (hence in the light), in the materials and in the shaping of his work. His art is balanced on the cusp between the terrifying and the glorious - as though, via the artistic act, the creative process, he was shaping that moment when Fate would be overcome, could be defeated - on behalf of us all, but particularly for History's victims. Even if it just means that we sit together as if in an archaic ritual, silently waiting: Attesa (The Waiting, 2008) - an action that can be more heroic than any conquest, than any heroic deed that leads to new disasters over and over again.
