Great solemnity and display of joy: this is how the founding of the People’s Republic of China was celebrated in 1949. A crucial moment in history, recounted through bright, colorful New Year Posters. The 35 artworks herein selected go from 1949 to 1953, a critical period when the requirements of political propaganda found a special and fruitful moment of synthesis in the deep-rooted context of Chinese popular art.
These posters are displayed abroad for the first time in over half a century, in the exhibition organized by the Confucius Institute of Milan University in collaboration with the Shanghai Propaganda Poster Art Centre.
