Abstract

The volume documents the site-specific performance that the Greek choreographer Dimitris Papaioannou presented at Collezione Maramotti in October 2019. In Sisyphus / Trans / Form the dancers' bodies are at the same time balanced and broken, they move in an installative dimension creating optical illusions which, inspired by the myth of Sisyphus, delicately try to illuminate the search for the meaning of being human.
Dimitris Papaioannou (Athens, 1964) was trained in the visual arts, as a painter and cartoonist, before devoting himself to the performing arts as a choreographer, director, dancer, set and costume designer. His visionary, powerful and original language eludes the traditional boundaries between dance, painting and sculpture. The bodies of the performers, incessantly mixed with raw materials and props, are skillfully broken down and reassembled in representations that echo classic myths and universal narratives.
