Author: Bianca Hermanin
Abstract

«Con compasso et misure»: The Drafting of Old St. Peter’s Plan by Tiberius Alpharanus in light of His Manuscripts

The purpose of this paper is to analyze the working method of Tiberius Alpharanus of Gerace († 1596), with reference to his most famous work, the plan of old St. Peter’s basilica. The essay examines both the graphic – that is, his own hand drawing, kept at the Historic Archive of the Fabric of St. Peter’s – and the written work of the cleric. By examining the notes of the cleric collected in zibaldone G.5 of the Archive of the Chapter of St. Peter’s, it is possible to review the drafting stages of the Ichnographia. On the one hand, comparing the manuscript with the drawing highlights the creative debt of Tiberius Alpharanus to Onuphrius Panvinius. On the other one, this kind of examination proves his collaboration with the Fabric’s craftsmen, who might have helped him measure some sectors of the basilica. Even nowadays, it is possible to ascertain that the cleric used every useful tool for the exact recording of St. Peters’s buildings measurements, without denying the ideological intent the plan was conceived with, as he repeatedly explained it himself in his works. The results of the measurements and surveys were simplified only in the last editing phases of the written text, dedicated to Pope Gregory XIII in 1582, and on the occasion of the printing of the ichnographia in 1590. Alpharanus’ notes, bequeathed by the cleric to the Chapter of St. Peter’s, constitute therefore an irreplaceable source to test the reliability of the cleric’s work and of his contribution to the knowledge of the ancient building.
