Abstract

Michele Sambin (Padua, 1951) is a musician, painter, theatrical performer as well as a pioneer in video art. For decades, the main focus of his research has been the relationship between image and sound. This volume examines the artist’s overall work, starting from the video-photographic installation Il tempo consuma, which is a reworked and updated version of three previous works created by Sambin at the end of the 1970s. The artist’s imagination swings between the two poles of Arche and Techne, yet the technique, which is in turn embodied in a device (whether pictorial, sculptural, installation, film, sound or performance), is not the generating principle of all his works, much less the ultimate goal, but rather a paradigm, a point of view from which to reveal the very essence of things. The catalogue, enriched with a wide array of color as well as black-and-white illustrations, is marked by “videomemories”, which trace the main stages of his activity in the form of a journal, and is complemented with critical essays by prominent international scholars.
