Abstract

Imagine being able to see in the water the trails of ships that have been sailing the Mediterranean for thousands of years, with their boundless baggage of riches and tragedies, hopes and disappointments. We would have billions of signs that, like infinite threads of a single story, tell of great peoples and their decline, of nobles and sailors, of emigrants and fishermen, of heroes and myths. Lino Tardia, Sicilian from Trapani and grandson of a tonnara Rais, developed his pictorial research from the contradictions of the sea for more than fifty years. The essence of his works, depicted through traditional and at the same time innovative techniques, lies in his being a witness to dramatic events of the twentieth century and at the same time at one with an ancient culture. The visions of his Mare della memoria emerge like sea foam.
