There is a curious cerebral “spark” that ignites when I enter an archive and sit down with a file of historic photographs. In that moment, I have a heightened sensation that I am “about to meet someone I haven’t met before.” Because I work with history, specifically with people who have suffered ill fates and vanished in time, the most intimate connection I can have with my subject matter is to go look for them—in the form of old photos and documents and, whenever possible, visit the places where they resided (rather, where they were often incarcerated). In this way, I feel as if I’m communing with them; I’m getting as close to them as I possibly can before working with their image and story in the studio. For me, this initial step in acquainting myself with my subjects and source material is fundamental. It creates a deeper connection with my subject matter, and in turn, a more profound work of art.
