As a result of the rapid economic growth due to oil exploitation, in the late 1960s Kuwait invited experts from all over the world to manage a country-wide urban development. Studio Architetti BBPR was tasked with several projects, including the plan for the Souq Area, the beating heart of Kuwait’s commercial and social life. Studio BBPR intended at once to safeguard the historical features of the buildings and the original functions of the areas, focussing on the conservation of cultural heritage, and to integrate the ongoing transformations, which involved new activities and technologies, with the evolution of the city system. Being a unique case in the Gulf area, the project still stands as a model for future strategies.
