Abstract

Born in Kinshasa and dividing his time between the Democratic Republic of the Congo and Belgium, Aimé Mpane describes himself as a modern nomad who casts a critical, lucid, and mischievous eye on today’s world, which is so often fraught with tensions. Immersed in the debate on the painful colonial heritage, the artist has always preferred an independent and nuanced reflection where brotherhood prevails over blame. Far from any Manicheism, he does not shrink from tackling directly such issues as the pillage of the African continent’s resources or the official initiatives to glorify colonisation. Through an oeuvre filled with cultural references, Aimé Mpane enables us to broaden our perception of the world and to gain a sharper awareness, even when this implies going “through the looking glass.” His participation in the exhibition Remedies, at the Royal Museums of Fine Arts of Belgium, helps us to re-anchor history, rather than erase it. Art to see more clearly, against all forms of amnesia.
