Abstract

The book documents the work of Katsutomi Horiki (1929-2021), a cultured and polished artist born in Matsusaka, in Mie prefecture, Japan. After graduating in Engineering, he moved to Italy to devote himself exclusively to painting. He attended the Accademia Albertina in Turin, making his debut with works characterized by abstract marks, defined by him as “imprints”, which he placed on expansive black or white backgrounds. In the 1980s he turned to working in color, with a cycle of paintings inspired by Piero della Francesca’s Storia della Vera Croce [Story of the True Cross], while from the 1990s he developed themes taken from the Odyssey. Horiki wrote about his painting: “I seek a universal language with which to speak to myself and others, to understand my existence and to allow others to understand how I think and therefore how I am, to consider and correct my course. This even at the expense of following a long and tortuous path. […] My life is my work.”
