This volume collects 100 of the most significant images of Carmelo Nicosia and his journey: it has lasted for more than thirty years and narrates, through black and white stills, extraordinary travel moments, ancient relationships between nature and vision, handshakes, and the special bond with unique and bold human beings.
In 1989, I landed on Stromboli, the fire island of the Aeolian Islands, without any particular historical or geographical information, but dragged along by the enthusiasm of some visionary friends who had already experienced the island’s enchantment. I had abandoned a preordained career as a brilliant pharmaceutical graduate to embark on the complex but still overwhelming path of writing and photography. The notion began to take shape in my restless soul as a man from the south that stopping time, delineating space with a photo and observing human processes, was the only possible way to be in the world, because the world had to be described in order to exist, with photography.
