“Those who travel without meeting others do not travel; they move”
The other is precisely one of the cardinal points of De Felici’s photographic quest, alongside the stunning portrayal of the relationship of mutual assistance and respectful coexistence established by native peoples with Mother Earth. Ever since Sogni d’acqua (“Water Dreams”), De Felici’s approach has always featured an intimate connection with Nature, as well as an ethical stance and exposure.
With this new photo series – taken in Seychelles – the author far from the chaos of a predatory West eternally at war, detected something necessary in these places, experiencing it from within as he visited and photographed them. He lived on-site, enjoying the vicinity and friendship of the sedentary communities. This allowed him to cleanse his gaze in order to tune it profoundly into a social and supportive context.
A traveller and filmmaker, and completely self-taught, Joseph De Felici moves freely between conceptual photography and dreamlike photo-reportages. Following extensive travels in Southeast Asia, his photobook Sogni d’acqua. Lungo il Mekong e oltre was published by Electa with the sponsorship of Nikon. He collaborated with photographer Ferdinando Gatta in 2018 to create the artistic project Torture, sponsored by Amnesty International, and in 2023 on Libertà. Both works were exhibited in Rome.
